The Best Way to Prepare for the Future (Deuteronomy 1)

Deuteronomy 1:22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.

We know the end result of this suggestion was not obedience and faith but fear and doubt. But we don’t know until Deuteronomy 1 that the suggestion to send the spies originated with the people.

It wasn’t necessarily a bad suggestion as Moses agreed to it (Deut 1:23) and so did the Lord (Num 13:1-2). But it does show us that knowing more about the future will not necessarily guarantee faith.

The key to faith and courage is not how much we know about what is ahead but about how much we know and believe about God. The issue was not the obstacles they faced but their failure to believe and trust God.

The lesson for us is that even if we have no idea what the future holds in this life, we can still go forward with courage and obedience if we know who is with us and who is leading. God is the key to today, tomorrow, and the next day. His presence makes all the difference. Developing our walk and relationship with Him is the best way to prepare for the future.
