Advice for a Young Person Trying to Find the Will of God for Their Life

Recently, I was emailed by a young man asking me to give him some advice on how to find the will of God for his life.  Below are a few thoughts that I wrote down and emailed to him:

  1. Read the revealed will of God in the Word of God every day and seek to be obedient to that.  Often we worry about the things we don’t know and God is wondering why we have not obeyed what we know to do. (Joshua 1:8).
  2. Seek to be in a place where we are willing to do anything God’s wants.  Jesus said if any man will do his will he will know the doctrine (John 7:17). Why should God show us what He wants us to do if we are not willing to do it.
  3. Be a servant and get involved.  Don’t wait around for the big plan, just get involved where you are.  Whatsoever your hand finds to do do it with all your might (Ecclesiastes 9:10).  God usually calls busy people.  Elisha was called while he was plowing a field.  Gideon was called while he was threshing wheat.  Jonah was already a prophet when he was told to go to Nineveh.  Moses was a shepherd.  Amos was a shepherder.  The disciples were fishermen, tax-collectors, etc.
  4. Pray over a map.  Pray for the world and learn about the world and the needs of the world.  Don’t allow personal interest to cloud the facts.  Really learn about the opportunities and the work that is going on.  Ask questions and learn as much as you can.  Ask God where He would have you fit into His global plan.
  5. Get Godly counsel.  Talk to your parents, your pastor, and other men/women of God about what they think.  Get their insight and wisdom on things.  There is wisdom in the multitude of counsellors (Proverbs 11:14).
  6. Be faithful in the little things.  Do your best where you are at today and God may seek to give you more opportunity. (Luke 16:10).
  7. Delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.  If you are really in love with the Lord and willing to do anything for Him, He will put a desire in your heart (Psalm 37:4, 1 Timothy 3:1).
