Book Review: On Being A Servant of God by Warren Weirsbe
Jesus made it clear that His definition of leadership and service is vastly different from the world’s. He said this in Matthew 20:25-28,
“…Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
I find that I constantly need to be reminded that leadership is about Christ-like service, serving God, serving others, and laying my life down for Him and for others.
Warren Wiersbe’s book “On Being a Servant of God” is a very helpful book that explains some important elements of serving God. And it does so in a concise but profound way. I highly recommend it to every Christian and especially as something for those who are growing and developing as Christians leaders within the local church.
In the book, the author defines ministry as that which “takes place when divine resources meet human needs through loving channels to the glory of God.” He explains the difference between trying to manufacture what others need rather than distributing the grace that God has already provided.
He also reminds us that people are needy but no matter what needs they have, “…their greatest need is to be rightly related to God and His will.” He talks about how ministering to others can help us grow and become more like Christ. He also stresses the important truth that all our ministry should be done to magnify Christ not promote ourselves.
There are many other helpful truths in the remainder of the book. It is only about 140 pages, and I’d encourage you to get a copy, read a chapter a day for 30 days and meditate on the truths and the principles of Scripture that are explained. I believe it will help you grow and develop as a servant of God.
