7 Important Reasons to Read Your Bible

bible

January is an exciting time for me because it is usually when I finish reading the Bible through and begin a new Bible reading plan. This year, I am on a schedule to read some of the NT and the OT every day. My goal is to finish by the end of June and read the entire Bible through twice this year.

If you have not begun reading the Bible through on a systematic basis, here are a few reasons why I would highly recommend you do so…

  1. The Bible is the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16). We value reading the words of important men and women. How much more should we value a message from the very mouth of God?
  2. The Bible is truth (John 17:17). Opinions abound, but truth is hard to come by. Most men are prone to exaggeration, embellishment, and dishonestly. In an age of pluralism, free thinking, and skepticism, it is great to know that there is one supreme authoritative voice for truth – the Word of God.
  3. The Bible is God’s revelation of Himself to us (Hebrews 1:1-3). The way God is speaking to men today and revealing Himself today is through His Son, the living Word, and through the record of His Son, found in the written Word. Why would we not want to learn more about the great God of heaven through the book He has given?
  4. The Bible guides us through the darkness of life (Psalm 119:105). So much confusion and uncertainty is all around us, yet the Bible is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.
  5. The Bible is our spiritual food (1 Peter 2:2). For those of us who have been born again through faith in Christ, we will grow only through the milk and meat of the Word. The Bible feeds our soul and makes us strong spiritually.
  6. The Bible is what sets us free (John 8:32). The lies of Satan, the Father of lies, are numerous and powerful in our society. His lies are so deceptive and widely accepted that it is hard to know we have believed them. The truth that exposes the lies and set us free is the Word of God.
  7. The Bible is more reliable than personal experience (1 Peter 1:16-19). Man’s experience is personal and subjective. The Word of God is objective, can be studied, compared, passed on without error, and searched.

No doubt there are many more reasons to read the Bible. If you can think of others, please comment below. The 7 reasons I list above are probably not new to most of you, but the key is to just get started.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Read a little bit every day. Don’t set your goals too high. Better to read a little every day than a lot for a few days and stop reading because you fell behind and got discouraged.
  • Pray and ask God to speak to You. Open God’s Word expectantly. You will never understand it all. Don’t be intimidated by what you don’t understand, just rejoice in what you do understand.
  • Read it even if you don’t feel like it. Make it a disciplined part of your routine, just like you might consider your morning cup of coffee or breakfast important.
  • Get an accountability partner that you share what you read with. This helped you to be more disciplined and gives you someone to share what God teaches you. It also may be an avenue to ask questions or get help with difficult passages.
  • Keep a journal to write down what God teaches you. This helps to imbed that truths into your mind, so that you can meditate on them all through the day. This also helps you to pay attention as you read.
  • Most of all have fun. The great God of heaven took time to use men to pent 1189 incredible chapters for our profit. It is His love letter to us! Why would we want to delve into the great treasures of God’s Word.
