Able to Save to the Uttermost – Hebrews 7

Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.’ — Hebrews 7:25

For those familiar with the centuries-old Levitical priesthood established by the law of Moses, it would have been very hard to accept that it had passed away and been replaced. But when we consider how much better Christ’s priesthood is, we realise that it was necessary that the Levitical priesthood be done away.

Christ is a priest after the order of Melchisedec and as such:

  • Is both a priest and a king (v.1)
  • Is king of peace and righteousness (v.2)
  • Has no beginning and no end (v.3)
  • Was treated as a greater by Abraham (and by extension Levi, Abraham’s great grandson) (v.4-10)
  • Is established by the power of His unending life (v.16)

Clearly, Jesus Christ’s priesthood is a better hope that makes us perfect and truly brings us nigh unto God (v.19). Christ will never die and His priesthood will never change. (v.23-24). As the unchanging, undying priest, He will continually be able to save and to help to the uttermost all who come to God by Him (v.25).

There is no weakness in Christ (v.28). He is completely holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sin, and higher than the heavens (v.26). He is set apart forevermore (v.28). That’s our priest, so let us continue to come to God by Him, knowing that He cares for us and and there to help us and to strengthen us unto the very end.
