About My Father’s Business – Luke 2

And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business?” — Luke 2:49

Only one event from Jesus’ youth is recorded for us – the time he stayed behind in Jerusalem to talk with the doctors of the law.

It’s fascinating for many reasons:

  • His not being found for three days;
  • His sitting with the doctors of the law, listening and asking questions;
  • His ability to amaze those listening with his answers and understanding;
  • His willingness to subject Himself His parents; and
  • His increasing in wisdom and stature.

Probably most remarkable and significant is what He has to say about this event, “wist ye not that I must be about my father’s business?”

In other words, he was surprised that His parents didn’t automatically assume that He would be in the temple learning, growing, and “about the father’s business.”

On any given day, it should be assumed that we would be about the father’s business. There should never be any doubt that we would waste time, be involved in sin, or otherwise not glorify God.

May this motto of Christ be the motto of every person, young and old – “I must be about my father’s business.”

God has work for us to do. There is no time to waste to do all we can to glorify Him. What business of the father can we engage in today?
