Blessed to See and Hear – Matt 13
“But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.” — Matthew 13:16–17
After many rejections, Jesus’ teaching style changes. He begins to use parables to teach the people. His purpose in using parables is twofold: 1) to explain truth to the teachable, and 2) to hide truth from the unteachable (v.11-13).
Jesus goes on to tell the disciples that are blessed to be able to see and hear what they are seeing and hearing from Him. He told them that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see and hear what they saw and heard.
Just as the disciples are blessed, so are we blessed to have the whole of Biblical revelation before us. It is there for us to see and to hear. But much of how it helps us depends on our attitude toward it. Will we listen to the truth God gives us? Will we obey what we already know? Will we act on what God tells us? If so, more will be given. If not, we will not receive any more and what we have might be taken away.
Looking at the parable of the sower, what kind of soil are we? Do we allow the wicked one to snatch away God’s Word? Do we give up on God’s Word when things get tough? Do we allow the world and riches to choke out God’s Word? Or do, we allow the seed of God’s Word to take root in our hearts and produce much fruit?
