Broken – Jer 19

Jeremiah took a clay bottle and smashed it. The sound reverberated throughout the valley and off the city walls. Onlooking rulers of the Jerusalem tried to keep their faces straight. “What was Jeremiah doing?”

His was attempting to illustrate, as God instructed him, the devastation their sin was causing. Just as the clay jar was now broken into a thousand pieces, so sin was ripping them to shreds.

Sadly, that generation would never be made whole. Sin took them so far that there was no returning, just as there would be no putting of the broken bottle back together.

We can learn a lesson from the shattered bottle. We must realise that sin crushes and destroys all it touches. It ruins lives and wreaks havok.

God wants to forgive and restore. But if we persist in hardening our neck and rejecting God’s words, we may get to a place from which we cannot return (v.15).

Don’t play with sin. The wages of sin is death. It is a poison the spreads, destroys, and defiles. It ruins all it touches. Confess your sin to the Lord and forsake it. Let His blood cleanse you from all unrighteousness.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”  – 1 John 1:9
