God Our Saviour – Titus 1

But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.’ — Titus 1:3–4

Several times in the New Testament, we find the title, ‘God our Saviour’ being used as Paul uses it here in Titus 1:3. God is called our Saviour in 1 Tim 1:1; 2:3; Titus 2:10; 3:4; Jude 25.

Interestingly, especially for those who deny the deity of Christ, Jesus Christ is also called our Saviour in:

  • Titus 1:4 ‘the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour’
  • Titus 3:6 ‘Jesus Christ our Saviour’

When we study carefully the Scriptures, we see that Jesus Christ was God in the flesh. Notice several other verses on this point:

  • 2 Cor 5:19 ‘God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself’
  • Col 2:9 ‘in him (Christ) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily’
  • Acts 20:28 ‘the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood’

Of course, we need to also consider the fact that Father, Son, and Spirit are distinct persons. But the important point to see from this passage is that the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour is God our Saviour.
