I Must Walk To Day – Luke 13
“Nevertheless I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following: for it cannot be that a prophet perish out of Jerusalem.” — Luke 13:33
Jesus possessed a distinct sense of mission. He knew why He came. He knew what the Father wanted Him to do. And He didn’t let anything get Him off course.
In Luke 12:51, we read, “when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem.”
Jesus’ whole life on earth was lived according to a divine timetable. In Luke 12-13, He knows that it is time for Him to suffer, to die, to rise again, and to be received up into heaven. So He steadfastly sets His face to go to Jerusalem.
On the way, the Pharisees warn Him that Herod has threatened to kill Him (Luke 13:31). He is not at all intimidated by Herod’s threats. He simply responds by telling Herod that He will continue casting out devils and doing cures today, tomorrow, and the next day (v.32). He says, “I must walk to day, and to morrow, and the day following.”
Do we have this same sense of purpose and divine mission? None of us are on earth by accident. All of us are placed here by God for a reason. And for those of us who are saved and know the Lord Jesus, we have a commission from God. We need to keep on walking with the Lord today, tomorrow, and the next. And nothing should distract us from that mission.
What things are getting us off course? Is it family, work, entertainment, sin, peer-pressure, laziness, fear? Just like Jesus was not afraid of Herod the fox, neither should fear of any person keep us from living out the mission God the Father has given us!
