My Doctrine Is Not Mine – John 7
“Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.” — John 7:16
The teaching of Jesus amazed his hearers for many reasons. The Jewish people were shocked by His knowledge especially because He had never studied formally (John 6:15). Jesus, however, let them know that the things He was teaching were given to Him and taught by God.
This is a great example for us. We also ought to teach the doctrine of God that comes from the Bible, not from our own ideas, opinions, or even other men.
Unfortunately, we often allow a lot of manmade ideas, opinions, and teachings to infiltrate our beliefs and thinking. We need to continually come back to the Scriptures to make sure that they actually teach what we think they do.
So what do you believe? Why do you believe it? Is it based on God’s Word or something else? May our doctrine not be our own, but God’s.
