Precious and Refreshing Unity – Psalm 133

Unity is pleasant, good, precious, sweet, and refreshing. These are all ways unity is described in Psalm 133. Speaking primarily of the unity the nation experienced as they came together to worship the Lord in Jerusalem, it is a great picture of how it should be for all those who believe in Christ.

We may not be uniform, doing everything in exactly the same way. But for those of who are saved and know the Lord Jesus Christ, there should be a sweet and pleasant sense of united love for the Lord and for one another. When we dwell together in unity, it is like the precious ointment that ran down Aaron’s beard and head when he was consecrated (v.2). It is also like the dew of Hermon descending on Zion to refresh and to invigorate life there.

As the precious ointment gave off a wonderful aroma and the dew refreshed all life, so dwelling in unity with those who our our brothers and sisters in Christ is a great blessing and great encouragement. On the other side, disunity is a source of real discouragement and frustration.

May God help keep petty disagreements in perspective. May we not fight with those who are our brothers. May we seek to dwell together in unity, focusing on Christ, the gospel, the truth of God’s Word. May our unity give off a wonderful aroma to the world and refresh us all. May we each do our part to endeavour to keep the unity in the bond of peace (Eph 4:3).
