Uncursable (Numbers 23)

Numbers 23:8 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? 23:23 This is no enchantment against Jacob, Neither is there any divination against Israel

This is an extraordinary account of a heathen king (Balak) hiring a well-known diviner (Balaam) to come and curse Israel. Yet when Balaam comes and offers sacrifices, the only words he can say are words of blessing. He was a prophet for hire, yet he was honest enough to say the truth that it is impossible to curse who God has blessed.

Israel is God’s chosen nation. God made some unconditional promises to her, and there is no way to counteract what God has promised. And the same is true for those who are in Christ. Romans 8 tells us, “If God be for us, who can be against us” (v.31), and “Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth” (v.33).
