What Buildings Are Here! – Mark 13

And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!” — Mark 13:1

People love to travel around the world and look at stones piled up; it’s called tourism. They go to Rome, Greece, London, Peru, America, and many other places to gaze up and take photos of the monuments men build to remember and to be remembered.

No monument of human construction was more impressive than the Herodian temple in the first century A.D. According to the Bible Knowledge Commentary, “It was an architectural wonder of the ancient world.”

So, as Jesus and His disciples passed by, one commented on the amazing stonework and construction. Jesus’ answer was to point out that one day not one stone would be left upon another. This came to pass just a few decades later when the city of Jerusalem would once again be destroyed by the Romans.

How easily we get impressed with man’s accomplishments! I’ve walked the streets of London, Rome, Washington, and Cairo and been too easily impressed with “great buildings.” God is not impressed with our buildings, our cities, our “architectural wonders.”

One day, “Heaven and earth shall pass away” (Mark 13:31). The only thing that will remain is God, His Word, and those who believe on Him. May God help me to focus on what is of eternal value and not be impressed by the things of this world.
