Thy Will Be Done – Matt 26
“And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” — Matthew 26:39
Three times Jesus prayed, “Thy will be done” to His heavenly Father. As the God-man, He was the perfect combination of deity and humanity. As God, He fully knew what He was about to face on the cross. As man, He found the prospect of the suffering, the separation, and the pain something that caused Him dread and sorrow.
Despite what the cross would mean for Him, despite the fact that He was about to suffer more than anyone has ever suffered, He was willing to surrender to the Lord. He modelled for us the perfect attitude to the will of God – “Thy will be done.”
“Not as I will, but as thou wilt,” ought to be the motto of every Christian. Every day we should wake up and surrender our wills and our lives to the Lord for whatever He wants. The hardest thing about this is saying no to our own plans, our own will, and our own desires.
What part of our wills do we need to die to? How willing and surrendered are we to the Lord? Will we work at surrendering to the Lord in prayer, like our Lord Jesus did in the Garden?
