A More Sure Word – 2 Peter 1
‘And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:’ — 2 Peter 1:18–19
Peter, along with James and John, was privileged to:
- Be an eyewitness of the majesty of the Lord Jesus Christ on the mount of transfiguration (v.16)
- Hear the voice of God the Father speak of Christ as His beloved Son (v.17).
Reflecting back on this incident, Peter described the voice of God the Father as ‘such a voice’ (v.17) and ‘this voice which came from heaven’ (v.18). He was amazed that he and the others heard this voice of God.
Yet, as amazing as that was, Peter says that the Scriptures are a ‘more sure word of prophecy’! In other words, the voice of God recorded on the pages of Scripture is more sure than a voice from heaven.
God’s written Word in the Bible is just as good and actually better for us than an audible voice of God from heaven. If we think we would listen to the audible voice of God, then we should most certainly take heed to the voice of God in Scripture (v.19).
The Scriptures are a light in a very dark place. They guide us and direct us through the darkness of our world as we wait on the return of Christ and the dawning of the day of His kingdom and reign (v.29)!
So, what voice are you listening to? The voice of God in Scripture is the surest voice there is, and we should take heed to it.
