Faith in God’s Economics (Leviticus 25)

Leviticus 25:18–19 18 Wherefore ye shall do my statutes, and keep my judgments, and do them; and ye shall dwell in the land in safety. 19 And the land shall yield her fruit, and ye shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety.

It would have taken faith on their part to obey God’s laws, including His instructions about the land. Every 7th year, they were not to work or harvest the land. God promised to provide enough on the 6th year to last through the year of rest.

Then on every 50th year, they were to have a year of Jubilee when land was returned, Hebrew slaves were released, and debts were canceled. Again, this required faith in God to provide for them, as they did what was counter-cultural to the world’s way of seeking personal gain.

And God asks us for faith today. As we put Him first in our finances, in our time, and in all we do, we must trust that honouring God is wiser than following the world’s wisdom of keeping everything for ourselves and not helping one another.

Proverbs 3:9–10 9 Honour the Lord with thy substance, And with the firstfruits of all thine increase: 10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, And thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
