Imagine taking wood or metal and forming it into the image of a man and then bowing down to worship it! This is idolatry, and it is ridiculous. But imagine worshipping wood, metal, plastic, and brick in the form of houses, cars and electronics!
Just as God’s mocks the foolishness of idolatry in Isaiah 44, so our own idolatry is absolutely ridiculous. When we care more about the approval of men, the pleasures of this world or material possessions, we are caught up in the same stupid idolatry.
If only we could understand that there is only one God. Beside the Lord God of the Bible, the King of Israel, the Redeemer, the Lord of hosts, there is no God! He is the first and the last. He is all that matters (v.6,8).
Knowing who God is takes away our fears, focuses our attention, turns our heart to the true Saviour, and gives our life purpose.
