A Famine in England

Oxford, England

Amos 8:11-13 “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.  In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.”

I cannot think of any passage that describes the condition of England any more than this verse.  There is a famine in the land.  This is not a lack of bread or water.  There is very little poverty here.  Everyone has enough and more than they need.  Yet, the people are starving.  The thing they lack is the Word of God.  They may wander from sea to sea, from north to east, to and fro, seeking God’s Word, and not find it.

There are cities and towns all across the country with little or no gospel witness.  There are many church buildings and many remnants of the past days when the Word of God was preach.  The Christian history of England permeates the land, yet the actual preaching of the Word of God and the proclamation of the gospel of Christ is hard to find.

Pastors all over the country are telling us about church buildings that are empty, congregations that are dying, and churches that have no pastor.  Much false teaching and false gospels are rising up in this spiritual vacuum.  What is so sad is that this country one the centre of Christianity and missionary efforts for the world!

There are some good churches across the country, but they are few and far between.  Please pray for God to raise up men to come and give their lives to preach God’s Word in this land.  The doors are wide open.  What are we going to do before it is too late?
